Simple Baked Apples

This baked apple recipe is the definition of comfort in a bowl. It’s simple to make, and the result is a warm, tender, and flavorful dessert. The spices blend with the tartness of the apple, resulting in a delicious and comforting experience.

Ingredients

  • 4 apples (if possible, use apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
    2 tablespoons brown sugar
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
    Pinch of salt
    1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Using a knife or an apple peeler, remove the core, making a hole in the center. Leave about 1/2 inch of the base of the apple intact so the filling doesn’t leak out. 3. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  3. Place the apples in a small baking dish. Divide the butter and spice mixture and fill the hollow of each apple.
  4. Add 1/4 cup of water to the baking dish. This will help prevent the apples from burning and create steam that will soften them.
  5. Bake for about 30 to 45 minutes. The baking time may vary depending on the type and size of the apples. They’re ready when the skin begins to wrinkle and the flesh is soft to the touch (you can check by piercing it with a fork).
  6. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Tips

  • For an extra touch, sprinkle chopped nuts or granola on top of the apples before baking.
  • Serve the baked apples alone or with a scoop of vanilla or vanilla ice cream, plain yogurt, or a drizzle of honey.
  • If you have any leftovers, the apples can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. They’re great reheated!
